A 1989 Gulfstream G-IV recently listed for $1.8 million couldn't climb above FL350 on a hot day in Phoenix. Meanwhile, a new Beechcraft King Air 260 — costing roughly one-tenth the price — was cruising comfortably at FL350 with passengers who arrived fresher and on schedule.
This isn't an isolated case. The used market is flooded with G-IVs that look impressive on the ramp but perform like wounded birds once airborne. After three decades of service, many early Gulfstreams are victims of deferred maintenance, aging hydraulics, and avionics that predate the iPhone.
The numbers tell the story. A properly maintained G-IV should cruise at 459 knots true airspeed at FL410. But aircraft with tired engines, leaking seals, and original Collins avionics often struggle to maintain 400 knots at FL350. That's slower than a TBM 960 turboprop, which hits 330 knots at FL310 while burning half the fuel.
"I've seen G-IVs that can't make their published performance numbers because the previous owner skipped the expensive stuff," says Mike Chen, director of maintenance at Jet Aviation Dallas. The "expensive stuff" includes engine hot-section inspections at $400,000 per side, hydraulic system overhauls, and compliance with Gulfstream's mountain of service bulletins.
Service Bulletin 100-34-04, addressing cabin pressure controller failures, alone affects hundreds of aircraft. Many owners defer compliance, leaving passengers with splitting headaches and crews manually controlling cabin altitude — assuming they can reach altitude at all.
The avionics gap is even more telling. G-IVs with original equipment lack synthetic vision, terrain awareness, and datalink weather that comes standard on a $200,000 King Air. Retrofitting a Collins Pro Line 21 system costs $800,000 installed. A full Garmin G5000 upgrade runs $1.2 million — more than some entire turboprops.
Meanwhile, that King Air 260 delivers genuine 300-knot cruise speeds, climbs to 35,000 feet in 24 minutes, and lands on 3,100-foot strips the Gulfstream can't touch. Its Garmin G1000 NXi avionics include everything the G-IV lacks, plus synthetic vision and automatic emergency descent mode.
Smart operators know this. NetJets quietly retired its G-IV fleet years ago, citing maintenance costs and dispatch reliability. They kept flying King Airs.
The harsh reality is that aviation physics doesn't care about badges. A tired turbofan with questionable maintenance records will lose to a sharp turboprop every time. The G-IV's reputation opens doors, but only if it can actually fly through them.
Buyers chasing the Gulfstream mystique often discover they've purchased a very expensive hangar queen. The savvy money is on proven turboprops that deliver predictable performance, lower operating costs, and the reliability that actually gets you home.
